How to Create Your Wikidata Entry
Unlike Wikipedia's strict requirements, Wikidata welcomes any entity with verifiable public references, making it your easiest path to Knowledge Panels and AI visibility.
Step 1: Get Started
Go to wikidata.org, create a free account, and click "Create a new Item". First, search to ensure your entity doesn't already exist.
Step 2: Add the Basics
Fill in three essentials:
• Label: Your entity's name ("Tesla, Inc.")
• Description: What it is in under 10 words ("American electric vehicle manufacturer")
• Aliases: Alternative names or common misspellings
Step 3: Add Key Properties with Credible Sources
Click "add statement" and include:
• What you are (company, person, product)
• Country and headquarters location
• Official website
• Founding date
• Industry/sector
• Social media profiles
The Golden Rule: Sources make or break your entry. Every claim needs a credible reference, news articles, government databases, industry directories, or academic publications. Use multiple independent sources when possible. Avoid blogs, social media posts, or press releases. No credible sources = deletion.
Creating a Wikidata Entry for Yourself
Personal entries require particular attention to verifiable achievements. Strong sources include:
• Academic identifiers: ORCID ID, Google Scholar profile, ResearcherID
• Published works: Books with ISBNs, peer-reviewed papers with DOIs
• Professional databases: LinkedIn (for employment), VIAF for authors, ISNI for creators
• Media coverage: Interviews, conference talks, podcast appearances (not self-published)
• Official records: Patent filings, company registrations where you're named
Add these as external identifiers, they're gold for establishing credibility and help AI systems correctly identify you across platforms.
Step 4: Connect to Your Website
Add Schema markup to your site with your Wikidata ID:
"sameAs": ["https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123456"]
Start now, the barrier is lower than you think, but quality sources are non-negotiable.
